Metropolitan Bushey Bowls Club is a small, friendly club open to everyone, and welcome both new and experienced bowlers!
Never played bowls before? No problem! It’s easy to learn, great fun, and a fantastic way to stay active — improving flexibility, mobility, and mental wellbeing. Plus, you’ll enjoy fresh air and the chance to make new friends.
Formerly known as Metropolitan Police (Bushey) Bowls Club, we are now Metropolitan Bushey Bowls Club—and you do not need any police association to join us. Everyone is welcome!
Our Club History
Founded in 1934 as the Metropolitan Police No.2 District Bowls Club, our club originally played at the District Sports Ground, part of the Metropolitan Police Training School in Hendon. As an integral part of the Metropolitan Police Bowling Association, the club had strong ties to the police community.
In 1964, when the Metropolitan Police acquired land on Aldenham Road, one of the first developments was the bowling green at Bushey. The club officially opened in 1967 under the new name Metropolitan Police (Bushey) Bowls Club and became affiliated with both the Watford & District Bowling Association and the Hertfordshire Bowling Association—affiliations we proudly maintain to this day.
Our first greenkeeper, Bob Southwood, set an exceptional standard for the green, leading Hertfordshire to host multiple County Championships at our facility. Over the years, we’ve also been honoured to have three of our members serve as County Presidents: Cyril Dace, Peter McNulty, and Graham Searle.
Today, as Metropolitan Bushey Bowls Club, we remain committed to supporting both District and County competitions, as well as hosting friendly fixtures, and other social activities.
